This time, I’m going to share some tips to help you start the day right and be more productive from the moment you wake up, because let’s face it, who hasn’t been there…
The alarm goes off at 5 in the morning—a dreadful noise we’ve set to drag us out of bed. We turn it off 1, 2, 3 times before finally giving in. We get up grumpy, wishing we could sleep for another hour, but it’s already late. You grab an apple for breakfast and, if you’re lucky, make it to work on time—hungry, sleepy, and in a bad mood. Sound familiar?
Follow these 5 tips to start your day right
Starting the day off right isn’t easy for everyone. Getting up early isn’t usually most people’s favourite thing, and while I can’t give you a magic formula to make you love getting up at the crack of dawn, I can offer a few tips to stop you feeling like you’re burning in hell every time the sun comes up.
Choose a pleasant alarm
A lot of people think that the louder an alarm is, the more effective it will be. And sure, it might work—but it’s like having someone kick you out of bed.
How would you wake up if someone did that to you? Probably not smiling. We’ve got used to being dragged out of bed the hard way: being shouted at, shaken, pushed—and all of this has undoubtedly made us wake up in a bad mood.
That’s how we got into the habit of being jolted awake, whether by a person or by a sound that nearly bursts our eardrums. Change your mindset and try something new. I didn’t believe it either until I gave it a go—and it worked wonderfully. Let me tell you about it.
These days, there are apps for just about anything you can imagine. For example, there are mobile apps that track your sleep stages, as well as alarm apps that use nature sounds and gradually turn up the volume.
When I installed it, I wasn’t expecting much, but I was surprised by the results. Even while I was still half asleep, I’d start to hear a gentle, pleasant melody that gradually got louder until it made me open my eyes. I no longer woke up startled or frightened by harsh alarm sounds; instead, I woke up calmly and gradually, without a jolt.
I encourage you to try this technique. Which would you prefer: someone waking you with a shake and a shove, or someone gently stroking your cheek and telling you it’s time to get up? Some people are heavier sleepers—I’m one of them—and it’s worked for me. So take note: this is definitely one of the tips for starting the day right that you should put into practice.
Have a drink to help you sleep better
There are drinks that can help us feel more cheerful and energetic in the morning. If you don’t know what else to try besides the famous cup of coffee, here are a few options:
Teas: Tea, whether caffeinated or caffeine-free, is very good for our health. Its benefits depend on the type, and these are the best choices for a morning drink.
-
Black Tea
It gives us more energy and helps us feel full, so if you’re someone who can’t stop eating in the morning, this could help.
-
Red Tea
It can improve your mood, is very good for digestion, and helps combat cholesterol problems.
-
Green Tea
It can help prevent cholesterol problems, diabetes, and heart disease. It also gives you more energy and can support weight loss when you drink it in the morning.
It’s best to avoid relaxing herbal teas, since what we need at this time of day is as much energy as possible.
-
Juices
Juices are not only delicious but also healthy. Here are a few options:
- A carrot and apple smoothie made with soy milk, an egg yolk, and a spoonful of honey tastes delicious and will give you an instant energy boost.
- Papaya, orange, and lemon: This drink can help satisfy your hunger, give you energy, and provide potassium, magnesium, vitamin B, and folic acid.
- Cool Water
It’s that simple: a glass of cool water in the morning will help your body function better. A few drops of lemon can help you lose weight, if that’s of interest to you.
Get enough sleep
We don't give enough importance to getting proper rest, and then we complain about feeling sluggish, tired, and unmotivated at work.
Try to get your activities done early so you can get 8 or 9 hours of sleep. This may sound difficult, but it's really a matter of habits and routines.
If you really want to feel your best in the morning, you need to take this point seriously.
