5 Tips for Improving Your Self-Esteem

It’s difficult to feel good about ourselves and believe in ourselves much of the time. Our education, teachers, and society have shaped our self-image, and sometimes it isn’t positive.

We let others define us and decide what is or isn’t possible for our dreams and abilities. It shouldn’t be that way.

Here are 5 tips to build, boost, or nurture your self-esteem.

Tip #1

Do something you enjoy: The best way to build healthy self-esteem is to do what we love, whether it’s a sport, an art, or the work we want to pursue. Feeling love for something we enjoy doing every day helps us think positively about ourselves. So if you aren’t doing anything you enjoy, start practising something you’ve always wanted to try.

Tip #2

Stay active: Inactivity doesn’t help us at all. Physical activity releases endorphins, dopamine, and other neurotransmitters. Staying in the dark and cooped up can make us feel sad and depressed, which can make all the negative thoughts we may have about ourselves take hold. That’s why it’s important to make a habit of going for a walk or jog, even if that’s all you do.

Tip #3

, . Learn new things: Sometimes we can feel stupid or ignorant, or as if we don’t know much. So challenge yourself to learn something new, whether it’s something you enjoy or something you find difficult. If you’re not very good at maths, instead of avoiding it, face it and study to improve. Making progress little by little will make you feel better and boost your self-esteem when you realise you’re capable of achieving what you set out to do.

Tip #4

Stay healthy: Eating lots of fatty foods and never exercising can lead to a few extra pounds that we may later hate when we look in the mirror, making us feel bad. But how can you complain about something you’re causing? Accepting our skin colour, eye colour, or lip shape is different from saying, “I accept that I’m overweight and I love it,” because self-love isn’t just about appearance; it also means considering the possible illnesses caused by our unhealthy habits. Eating well and exercising will help you feel and look good, which can improve your self-esteem.

Tip #5

Build on your strengths and work on your weaknesses: We all have things we’re good at. There are different types of intelligence, and some of us are better at certain things than others. Take the time to list your strengths and build on them. Dedicate more time to them and develop them further. Then choose one or two weaknesses to work on and improve. Not being very good at something is no reason not to work at getting better.

Work on yourself, because you’re the one person who will be with you for the rest of your life.
