Tips to Prevent a Hangover

Most of us have had a hangover at some point after a few—or many—drinks, and we know it can be absolutely miserable.

Everyone's body is different, so we don't all experience hangovers in the same way. Some people are more tolerant of alcohol than others, while people with gastritis or a sensitive stomach may feel its effects more severely.

However, anyone can try the tips below.

1 – WATER, WATER, AND MORE WATER

Tips to Prevent a Hangover

Water is always our best ally when it comes to a hangover. You should drink it before, during, and after consuming alcoholic beverages. Alcohol dehydrates our bodies, and the water in our bodies is expelled through urine, which also carries away salts and minerals that are essential to us. That’s why many people recommend drinking water before and during drinking—that is, having water while you drink alcohol too. I’ve read that you should drink a glass of water for every glass of alcohol. I find that a little difficult because my stomach gets bloated from all the liquid, but I have to say that drinking water beforehand, a few glasses while drinking, and some before bed has helped me a lot with hangovers.

2 – DON’T DRINK ON AN EMPTY STOMACH

Tips to Prevent a Hangover

Many people decide to go drinking on an empty stomach so they won’t feel full, but that’s a big mistake—and a nightmare the next day.

Eat something before heading out for drinks. The more you eat, the longer it will take for the alcohol to affect you. Many people recommend foods like pizza, chicken wings, and fries, since fat slows down alcohol absorption. Think about how you’ll feel the next day, and you’ll probably think twice before drinking on an empty stomach again.

3 – STICK TO ONE DRINK ALL NIGHT

Tips to Prevent a Hangover

Anyone who has mixed different types of alcohol knows it’s not the wisest choice if you want to avoid a hangover. The body processes each type of alcohol differently. If you mix a bit of everything, your body will go into overdrive trying to process it all at once, and you’ll feel it the next day. So think carefully before having beer, vodka, mixed drinks, and tequila shots.

Sometimes, when you’re out, you accept drinks from friends or take shots during games. If you don’t tolerate alcohol well and are prone to bad hangovers, I recommend avoiding this. It’s better to say “No” to a bit of fun than to say “Yes” to a terrible hangover that will knock you out for a whole day.

4 – KNOW YOUR LIMITS

Tips to Prevent a Hangover

As I’ve mentioned, everyone’s body is different, so know your limits. If you’ve been drinking for a while, you’ll know which drinks affect you worse than others, how many drinks will give you a horrible hangover, and how many you can have and still get by.

Don’t drink more than you know you can handle just because of peer pressure or to get more into the party mood. You don’t need to get completely drunk to enjoy the evening.

5 – GOOD VENTILATION

Tips to Prevent a Hangover

They say that in poorly ventilated, stuffy places, you’re more likely to feel dizzy and start experiencing symptoms. Our bodies need oxygen, so next time, before heading home, take a walk outdoors and focus on your breathing. This will help you feel better in the moment and may help with your hangover the next day.
